Introduction, page 3
This book has been compiled to give children opportunities to develop their COMMUNICATION SKILLS. With the teacher’s guidance, meaningful CLASSROOM DISCUSSIONS based on the TOPICS in this book can:
i) develop self-esteem, ii) promote listening skills, iii) provide motivation for relevant written follow-up activities.
It is important for the class teacher to realise that every child is already at some point on the talking continuum. Therefore, in order to encourage the child lacking in confidence and fluency, allow him/her to:
i) select a ‘favourite topic”, ii) ask a stimulating question, iii) participate in the discussion, thereby achieving progressive acceptance and self-confidence.
The TOPICS and ACTIVITIES in this publication are also beneficial when programming for the coming year.
